What to look for when purchasing a photo printer to print from a camera phone at home.

  1. Interfaces and compatibility
It is now possible to print directly from a camera phone to a home printer without requiring the use of a computer. Common direct printing methods available on today's camera phones include PictBridge (via USB cable), Bluetooth (10m/30ft wireless range) and memory cards.

PictBridge LogoThe PictBridge printing cable is often shipped in the box with your camera phone. It is usually the same USB cable that also serves other purposes like home computer synchronization. PictBridge capability is often indicated by name or with a PictBridge logo on products or in other product information in stores or on the manufacturer's website.

Bluetooth LogoBluetooth capability is becoming more common in camera phones, primarily for use with hands-free headsets. Most phones with this wireless technology will also be able to send your pictures directly to a printer. If you are in the process of buying or if you have bought your phone from your Cellular service provider, it is advisable to check with them to insure that the Bluetooth printing capability is enabled. Bluetooth capability for printers is commonly offered via an optional adapter by printer manufacturers, and is sometimes built directly into the printer. Bluetooth capability is often indicated by name or with a Bluetooth logo on products or in other product information in stores or on the manufacturer's website. Also look for the Bluetooth Print logo for added assurance that the product features Bluetooth printing capability.

Memory Cards in phone cameras are becoming more common and easier to remove. Due to smaller and smaller phones, these cards are often smaller than a memory card used in a digital still cameras. Many photo printers now feature built-in slots for use with these memory cards. They typically require an adapter for insertion of a camera phone memory card into a printer; this adapter usually comes with the memory card.

It is advisable, whenever possible, to test the printing capability before purchasing, or check for compatibility information on the phone camera and printer manufacturer's product packaging and website. Look for "Mobile Printing Ready" in product information. This is a good indicator that the product was designed with mobile phone camera printing capability. The featured printing methods should be indicated in parenthesis following the words "Mobile Printing Ready".
  2. Print Quality
For best printout quality and maintenance for your printers, it is best to use only original ink and paper recommended by the printer manufacturer. Check the printer manufacturer's website for recommendations on printer models and ink/paper combinations. Most printer manufacturers provide a guide on ink and paper for various print projects on their websites. Look out for information such as "time to dry", "color fastness", and "print longevity".

It is advisable, whenever possible, to see for yourself the printing quality of both the phone and printer before purchase. Some retailers offer in-store demos or have print samples for you to evaluate. This is often the best way for you to judge the quality of the products you are purchasing.
